This year, Canada Day may look a little different as we are unable to gather and celebrate Canada’s 153rd birthday like we normally would. However, we can find new ways to celebrate our great country and all it has to offer!

Midland and Penetanguishene, along with the Townships of Tay and Tiny have created a new way to commemorate Canada Day this year – virtually! The Culture Alliance in the Heart of Georgian Bay has put together several activities for the whole family to enjoy from the comfort of their own homes! These activities are free for anyone to participate in, but they do ask that you consider donating your favourite local charity.

One of the great things planned for the day includes live music beginning with ‘O’Canada’ sung by local artist Emma Reynolds. Later in the day, Dylan Lock will be live-streaming a special Canada Day concert. Dylan has been hosting live-streamed concerts for the duration of the pandemic to spread a love of music and to raise money for the fight against COVID-19. Check out his Facebook page here. Tune in at 3 pm on Canada Day to listen to this amazing local talent.

Another awesome activity scheduled for the day is learn to juggle with the Fire Guy. If you have seen this fantastic performance in the past, have been inspired to try it, now is your chance to learn from the best! You may want to start with something a little less dangerous (we would recommend tennis balls) but tune in to this lesson for a basic lesson and a lot of entertainment!

For those of you who are looking to add a little physical activity to your Canada Day, there are several offerings for you!

  • Start with family yoga with Retreat Yoga and Wellness! Get your stretch ‘on’ if you’re looking for a more relaxed physical activity.
  • For those who prefer a little higher intensity workout, I would recommend checking out the family exercise with No Borders Fitness. These awesome ladies sure know how to make you sweat while loving every minute of it!
  • Finally, if you are looking to have a good time dancing it out we have that for you too! The Dancers Studio is going to facilitate a dance-along for everyone to join!

But wait, there’s more! For the crafty individuals, there are many activities like:

  • Make a Mess Art Studio will be conducting a follow-along at home art demo;
  • Add some tradition to your Canada Day! The Penetanguishene Centennial Museum and Archives will be teaching pioneer crafts for the whole family to participate in;
  • For the inspiring culinary artist, MegaMindful Living will be cooking dinner virtually and will be creating some healthy smoothies for you to try at home;
  • Finally, for those with a sweet tooth, you can partake in the baking of butter tarts with the Boys and Girls Club. Check out their video here!

Throughout the day there even more events scheduled: storytelling with Star Otter Artperformances by All Occasions Magicballoon animals with Bella Magic and more!

Canada Day might look a little different this year, but does that not mean you can’t make it special from home! A huge thank you to the Culture Alliance in the Heart of Georgian Bay and all of the organizations involved in creating this virtual Canada Day celebration!
